When I first started delving into the liturgical calendar years ago, St. John’s Tide, aka Midsummer – the feast of John the Baptist – was what really drew me in. John’s feast was placed near the Summer Solstice, while Christmas was placed near the Winter Solstice…six months apart, just as John was said to be six months older than Christ. (Something that’s especially unusual about this placement is that Christmas and St. John’s Tide both celebrate nativities – whereas feast days normally commemorate deaths).

After the Summer Solstice, the seasonal rhythm rotates – ever so slowly, the days get shorter and the nights get longer, until the longest night of the year at the Winter Solstice, with Christmas on its heels. As John the Baptist said: “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30) – and the placement of these holy days at the Solstices mirrors this sentiment so poetically.

Here’s my little Midsummer offering in celebration of St. John’s Tide – inspired by the traditions, folklore, and plantlore of this enchanting time of year.

The photos below are a preview of what will appear in my Etsy shop – if you’re interested in purchasing anything, please visit my Etsy shop on Wednesday, June 24 at 1 pm PST…and of course feel free to get in touch with any questions in the meantime!

Tiny glimpses into the world of Hearthstone Fables, these enchanting faery-sized Vignettes bring cheer and whimsy into a home’s every nook and cranny. Tuck them behind the draping fronds of a fern, amidst dusty books on the shelf…miniature windows into a magical world, they enliven all of the sheltered corners at home.

Vignettes are hand-drawn, inked, and colored with colored pencils & white gel pen on toned paper, then framed in tiny frames. They have been sealed with a fixative for extra protection. The drawings vary in size (specifics will be listed in their respective Etsy shop listings) but are generally 2-3 inches tall.

These original drawings are created with graphite, colored pencil, white gel pen, and ink on toned paper. They have been sealed with a fixative for added protection and have been framed.
